The five pedestrians who tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Bindura on Saturday were young girls from the same extended family.
In a statement shared on the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) X page on Sunday, September 29, authorities confirmed that a Nissan Primera carrying one passenger veered off the road, hitting six pedestrians walking along the roadside before overturning and landing on its roof. According to the police:
“The ZRP confirms a fatal traffic accident that occurred on 28/09/24 at around 16:04 hours at the 90-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mukumbura Road, resulting in the deaths of five individuals.”
The accident led to three pedestrians dying at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to Bindura Hospital. Another pedestrian, along with a passenger in the Nissan Primera, was also injured and is receiving treatment at Bindura Hospital.
Reports from ZBC News indicate that the victims were young girls living at the Bindura Rural District Farm compound.
Eyewitness Mikirina Julius, a relative of the victims, shared her shock, stating:
“When I crossed the road, I saw the children and walked ahead. When I looked back, I heard the car screech, and it had overturned. I rushed to the scene and started crying, not realizing the children who had died were my sisters.”
Bindura Assistant District Development Coordinator, Llydia Hlabati, mentioned that the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) is working to provide support to the grieving family. She said:
“As CPU Bindura district, we have sent a report to the head office and are hopeful the children will be buried with government assistance. It’s a heartbreaking situation as all the girls were close in age and came from the same household.”
Four of the girls, two aged 14 and two aged 13, died at the scene, while the fifth, whose age is unclear, passed away at Bindura Hospital. A sixth child sustained severe injuries, including head trauma and a fractured leg, and is currently receiving medical care at Bindura Hospital.
