Brittney Griner arrives at US hospital after being released by Russia in prisoner swap

Brittney Griner has returned to the United States for the first time in ten months, having been freed from Russian captivity in a prisoner swap with “Merchant of Death” Viktor Bout.

The WNBA player arrived to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio early Friday morning, where she would be checked and treated as needed.

Ms Griner and Bout were seen exchanging words on the tarmac of a runway in the UAE on Thursday, after weeks of discussions between Washington and Moscow.

The agreement does not include US Marine Paul Whelan, who has been held in Russia for four years. Mr Whelan told CNN that he was “greatly unhappy” that he was not included in the prisoner swap, adding, “I don’t understand why I’m still sitting here.”

As the trade divided sentiment throughout the country, President Joe Biden reiterated on Thursday that “we have not forgotten about Paul Whelan” and pledged to “never give up” on winning his release.
