Bulawayo Businessman Found Dead in Suspected Suicide Near Cowdray Park

A businessman and owner of a butchery at the popular Bulawayo hangout spot, koChigumira, has been found dead in a suspected suicide.

Residents of Cowdray Park discovered the man’s body in a black Mercedes-Benz parked on the street at around 9 PM on Saturday and immediately informed the police. The deceased had a gunshot wound to the head.

Police identified him as John Tafara Madzikatire, the owner of Samaz Butchery located in Luveve. Acting spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Bulawayo, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the case, stating that it is being treated as a suspected suicide, though investigations are still underway.

In a statement, Msebele said:
“We confirm the death of John Tafara Madzikatire, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head. While the case is being handled as a suicide, investigations are ongoing.”

An employee at Samaz Butchery revealed that they last saw Madzikatire around 5 PM on Saturday when he delivered meat to the koChigumira outlet in Luveve. He was reportedly driving his black Mercedes-Benz and accompanied by a young woman, who stayed in the car while the delivery was made.

The employee, speaking anonymously, said:
“He collected beef from the butchery in Pumula North and brought it to Luveve around 5 PM. A young lady was with him in the car, but she stayed behind while we unloaded the meat from the boot. Later, we were informed by one of his friends that he had shot himself outside the woman’s house in Cowdray Park.”

The employee expressed shock at the news, stating that the butcheries would remain closed until further updates from Madzikatire’s family.

Reports indicate that Madzikatire was found with a significant sum of money in various currencies, including over US$4,000 and R19,000. The married father of two, originally from Mutare, was reportedly discovered just a short distance from the residence of his alleged mistress.
