Bulawayo Robber Shot Trying to Snatch Gun from Police Officer

A 35-year-old suspected armed robber and the police engaged in a dramatic altercation last Saturday in Bulawayo that resulted in the suspect being hospitalised for gunshot wounds.

The suspect, James Moyo, ended up in the hospital after he was wounded in the stomach while trying to disarm a police officer carrying a CZ pistol that was loaded with six bullets.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, confirmed the event in a statement on Monday. Nyathi clarified that the shooting happened in Queens Park, Bulawayo, after Moyo and two other people were taken into custody for robbing the Gunya Shopping Centre earlier that day. The other two people were Tinashe Dembure and Mthulisi Maphosa.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police says that on April 20, 2024, in Queens Park, Bulawayo, a shooting incident involving a 35-year-old robbery suspect, James Moyo, took place. The shooting incident happened after the suspect, Tinashe Dembure, 29, and Mthulisi Maphosa, 29, were apprehended in connection with a robbery case that happened at the Gunya Shopping Centre, Mahatshula North, Bulawayo, on April 20, 2024, at approximately 15:00 hours, the statement read. According to Nyathi, Moyo dropped his machete upon arrest but then attempted to wrestle the loaded CZ pistol from the police officer, prompting the officer to respond by shooting Moyo in the stomach.

“Subsequently, the suspect was shot in the stomach by the police and was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for treatment. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that any form of confrontation with police officers will be met with appropriate response,” he added.
