Bulgarian Investor ‘Adam Markov’ Arrested for Smuggling Stolen Jeep Cherokee into Zimbabwe

The bail hearing for 33-year-old Bulgarian national Adam Markov, accused of smuggling a stolen Jeep Cherokee from South Africa into Zimbabwe, is scheduled to take place today.

Markov, who was apprehended by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS) with assistance from Interpol, appeared in court on Saturday and was remanded in custody awaiting his bail application.

According to the prosecution, Markov allegedly stole the vehicle in South Africa and smuggled it into Zimbabwe using fake registration plates.

On Friday, detectives from CID VTS Harare received intelligence that the stolen Jeep Cherokee had been fitted with forged registration plates bearing the number AGQ 6923.

Acting on the tip-off, detectives located the vehicle in Markov’s possession. Upon inspection, they discovered that the vehicle’s chassis number had been severely tampered with. The original chassis number had been removed and replaced with a fake identifier, 1C4RJFFGXCC167643. However, the original engine number, CC142923, remained intact.

Interpol’s records confirmed the vehicle had been stolen in South Africa, and its legitimate chassis number was 1C4RJFGG3CC142923. Authorities are working to track down the vehicle’s rightful owner in South Africa.

This isn’t Markov’s first brush with controversy. Last September, he made headlines after accusing two Zimbabwean businessmen, Barnabas Kavai and Ashley Makara, of defrauding him of US$200,000 in a gold mining investment scam.

Markov alleged that Kavai, a director at KPM Mining, and Makara, the owner of Crown Mine in Guruve, had orchestrated a fraudulent scheme that resulted in his financial loss. However, the case has since taken an unexpected turn.

Authorities now suspect that Markov’s fraud allegations were part of an elaborate plot to seize control of Kavai’s and Makara’s business operations and mining interests. Preliminary investigations suggest that Markov may have fabricated the accusations to manipulate public perception and leverage his position for personal gain.

As Markov faces allegations of vehicle theft and smuggling, the court will also scrutinize the legitimacy of his previous claims against Kavai and Makara.

His bail hearing today will determine whether he remains in custody as investigations into the Jeep Cherokee case and his broader activities continue.

Efforts are ongoing to uncover the full extent of Markov’s alleged schemes, both in Zimbabwe and across international borders.
