Recent public appearances by President Emmerson Mnangagwa alongside controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo have reportedly stirred up controversy within Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu PF party, according to insider sources who spoke with NewsDay.
Anonymized sources within Zanu PF disclosed that Vice-Presidents Kembo Mohadi and Constantino Chiwenga voiced dissatisfaction with Mnangagwa’s association with Wicknell Chivayo. The public appearances of Mnangagwa with Chivayo, including the purported use of a private jet, have caused some party and government officials to take notice.
There are rumours circulating in Zanu PF circles that Chivayo may soon be assigned to a high-ranking post inside the party, indicating that he may be receiving potential favours.
Notwithstanding these rumours, Farai Marapira, the director of information for Zanu PF, refuted the accusations, highlighting Mnangagwa’s inclusive stance and Chivayo’s endorsement of the president’s policies and charitable undertakings.
However, Chivayo’s presence has reportedly generated discord inside Zanu PF, according to political analysts Tendai Ruben Mbofana and Rejoice Ngwenya. They are worried about the probable sidelining of seasoned party members and the impact of money on party dynamics.
Chivayo’s role in Zanu PF matters has come under increased scrutiny after he received Mnangagwa before Vice-President Mohadi during the Easter holiday, breaking protocol. He also made a sizable donation to a church.
Chivayo, who is well-known for his lavish lifestyle and murky business transactions, asserts to have substantial investments in the power and energy industries, yet it is still unclear where his money comes from.
Chivayo has gained notice recently for giving expensive cars and gadgets to singers and social media influencers, underscoring his standing and relationships in Zimbabwean society.
