Former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has announced her resignation from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and as a Member of Parliament.
Mkhwebane, who joined the EFF in 2023 after facing significant challenges in her career, expressed in a letter circulating on social media that she wishes to focus on her family and personal well-being.
In her message, she stated, “Today, I’m saying goodbye to you, Fighters. After thoughtful consideration and discussions with my family, I feel it’s time to step back, spend time with them, rest, and continue advocating for the vulnerable when I can.”
Mkhwebane acknowledged the support she received from the EFF over the past year, calling it a refuge during a difficult time. “Your unwavering support has been a beacon of hope, and I am sincerely grateful for that. Now, I want to cherish moments with my family.”
Reflecting on her experiences as Public Protector, she mentioned feeling that the fight for freedom had been in vain and voiced her frustrations about perceived violations of her rights. “There has never been a time when I felt my rights were more infringed upon than during my tenure. This situation persisted even after my removal from office, which I believe was unconstitutional.”
Mkhwebane also expressed disappointment with the South African judiciary, Parliament, and mainstream media for what she perceives as a coordinated attack on her character. She is among several notable figures who have joined and subsequently left the EFF.
