Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo has come under intense scrutiny following the online leak of payments mentioned in purported voice recordings that he now claims are generated by advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Chivayo has issued a statement distancing himself from the alleged voice recordings, asserting that they are fabrications created by his business partners, Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu. According to Chivayo, Chimombe and Mpofu employed sophisticated AI technology to manipulate the recordings, making it seem as if he had incriminated himself by claiming undue influence over President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In response to the viral audio recording, the Zanu PF youth league released a statement condemning Chivayo’s actions and accusing him of exploiting his proximity to the 81-year-old President. The league has called for an investigation into Chivayo’s conduct, reflecting growing concerns within both the government and the ruling party about the potential abuse of power and influence.
The contentious audio recording, which has circulated widely on social media, allegedly features Chivayo in conversation with Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu. In the recording, the voice attributed to Chivayo claims that President Mnangagwa is under his control and urges his associates not to worry about the proceeds of an alleged US$40 million tender from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for supplying election materials for last year’s disputed polls. Chivayo is purported to assure Chimombe and Mpofu of future lucrative deals with various government departments due to his close connections with Mnangagwa and other influential figures.
In his statement, Chivayo vehemently denies the authenticity of the recording and shifts the blame to Chimombe and Mpofu, accusing them of orchestrating a scheme to extort him. He apologizes to President Mnangagwa, First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa, Central Intelligence Organisation director-general Isaac Moyo, and other high-ranking officials whose names were implicated in the recording.
