Corruption Commission Under Scrutiny for Alleged Hypocrisy Amid Allegations of Lavish Benefits

Harare, Zimbabwe | The very commission tasked with investigating corruption has come under intense scrutiny for allegedly engaging in practices that mirror the issues it was created to combat.

Despite its mandate to uncover and eradicate corruption, reports have surfaced suggesting that the commission itself has been generously compensating its members with hefty allowances, leading to accusations of hypocrisy.

While the commission has been vocal in its pursuit of Harare Mayor’s alleged financial mismanagement, the irony is not lost on critics who point to the lavish benefits that have been afforded to the commissioners. Their office, some claim, has become a “money grazing field,” raising questions about the integrity of an institution meant to hold others accountable.

Sources reveal that the commissioners were each provided with cars, despite only serving for a mere nine months. This benefit, alongside their daily allowances, has raised eyebrows as their pay packages are reportedly higher than those of the Harare Mayor—a target of the commission’s most recent scrutiny.

Such generous allowances have ignited a backlash, with many arguing that the commission is making a mockery of the mayor’s office while turning a blind eye to the far higher salaries enjoyed by top executives.

Critics have pointed out that rather than focusing on high-level government officials and corporate executives earning eye-watering salaries, the commission seems more intent on targeting figures like the mayor, whose allowances, though significant, pale in comparison to the benefits enjoyed by the commissioners themselves.

The apparent contradictions between the commission’s rhetoric and actions have raised concerns about its ability to act impartially and effectively.

If its leadership is entangled in practices that resemble the very corruption they claim to fight, many are questioning whether the commission’s efforts will result in any meaningful change or if it is merely perpetuating a system of inequality and self-interest.

As calls for accountability grow louder, the commission finds itself under pressure to address these concerns and reassess its approach to investigating corruption—especially when it is accused of standing on the same shaky moral ground as those it is tasked to investigate.
