Harare, Zimbabwe – DJ Fantan, the renowned record producer and music executive, is embroiled in a heated legal battle with his former wife, Gamuchirai Nemukuyu, over child maintenance.
Gamuchirai has accused him of presenting a fake receipt in court to back his claims of providing for their family post-divorce.
The drama unfolded at the Harare Civil Court yesterday when Gamuchirai summoned DJ Fantan, seeking US$300 a month in maintenance for their two minor children.
DJ Fantan vehemently opposed this request, asserting that he was already covering their expenses, including school fees, rent, groceries, and clothing.
However, Gamuchirai challenged his statements, alleging, “The grocery receipt he showed the court last time was fake. I realized it when I was home; he had never bought groceries worth US$1,500.
Ever since I moved in with my new husband, he is not buying any groceries or paying rent, and I do not want him to pay rent for me. I just want him to take care of his own children because he often brings Mazoe, Cerevita, and sweets.”
In his defense, DJ Fantan suggested that he could produce witnesses or video footage showing him buying groceries with his ex-wife and children at a tuckshop, demonstrating his commitment as a responsible father.
He claimed, “She is only asking for maintenance because she wants to spend that money living her best lifestyle with her friends. I take care of my children and provide them with everything they want.”
Magistrate Johanna Mukwesha intervened, emphasizing that child maintenance is a shared responsibility. She deemed US$300 excessive and ultimately ordered DJ Fantan to pay US$100 a month in maintenance.
