A Durban police officer has been arrested for allegedly possessing a bank card belonging to the mother of hijack victim Zarah Ramsamy, who tragically lost her life earlier this month. The 11-year-old Grade 5 student was killed in early September when hijackers ran over her with her parents’ vehicle in a fast-food restaurant parking lot. She died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
On October 4, 2024, police made a significant breakthrough in the investigation, leading to the arrest of Constable Minenhle Makhaye.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda stated that Makhaye is not facing charges related to murder or hijacking.
“When the hijacked vehicle was recovered in the Cato Manor area, the constable was called to drive the vehicle to the Malvern police station. It was during this time that he allegedly took possession of the bank card and stole it,” explained Netshiunda.
Makhaye made his second appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where it was revealed that he had spent R1,000 on alcohol. State Advocate Calvin Govender informed the court that Makhaye was found with 105 bank cards in total.
The court has adjourned his bail application until October 20, 2024.
