As the departure of politicians from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) continues, member Anthony Matumba offers his perspective on the trend.
Floyd Shivambu, the party’s former national organizer and deputy president, was the first high-profile exit, joining the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK Party). Matumba characterized Shivambu as a political careerist in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He identified three groups of individuals leaving the EFF, starting with “bitter opportunists” who feel entitled to positions in Parliament or local councils. Matumba explained, “They believe the EFF owes them a spot, especially after not receiving roles following the elections.”
Next, he noted that there are political careerists who aspire for greater heights. He included Shivambu, Mzwanele Manyi, and potentially former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane in this category. Mkhwebane recently announced her departure, stating in a letter that she needed time to rest and focus on her family while continuing her advocacy for the vulnerable.
Matumba elaborated, “Careerists often hold good positions within the EFF but seek more significant opportunities. The MK Party is enticing them with offers comparable to those in sports.”
He believes these careerists see potential in the MK Party to grow and possibly lead at various governmental levels.
The third group he described consists of members who are loyal to individuals rather than the party itself. “They are not truly committed to the EFF but rather to the personalities they follow,” he said.
