Family Demands Clarity on Bus Conductor’s Death Amid Conflicting Reports

The family of a bus conductor, who reportedly died after being struck by a trailer from a kombi on the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway, is demanding clarification about the incident.

There are numerous questions and emerging theories regarding the cause of his death.

Initial reports indicated that Leo Tinashe Masocha was hit by a trailer and died instantly. There were also claims that he was intoxicated.

However, the family contends that the statements from the driver and the police are inconsistent, fueling suspicions of foul play on the night of the incident.

The accident occurred on July 1 around 10 a.m. at the 60 km mark on the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway. Masocha was buried four days later in Chivi.

The family insists that it was a bus, not a kombi, involved in the accident. The police confirmed that Masocha was drunk at the time of the incident.

Miriam Zimondi, his mother, stated:

“The driver claimed Tinashe died at the hospital after being hit by a car, while the police said he died instantly from a hit-and-run accident. The statements are contradictory, and we wonder why a post-mortem was not performed.

“We are struggling financially. We were told the body should be brought without a post-mortem. We have many unanswered questions, and this situation is deeply painful for us as a family.

“The driver says our son was hit by a pickup truck from behind, but the truck did not stop. The driver claims he died at the hospital, but the police say he died at the scene. We are confused, especially since there was blood in the bus that was later removed at the police station.

“It is also said that the driver took the body to the police, but some of his clothes were left behind in the bus, and we do not know what happened to them.

“The bus owner contributed R5000 for the funeral, but there is conflicting information about whether he was hit by a vehicle or a trailer. The driver and others who attended the burial asked for blood that was found in the bus.

“He was born on August 5, 2001, but they claim he was 21 years old when he was actually 23.

“I want to know the true cause of my son’s death. If possible, we want an exhumation and a post-mortem to get answers.”
