A grieving family, overwhelmed by frustration and grief, left their relative’s coffin at an Ecosure branch after the funeral provider refused to cover the funeral expenses.
The refusal stemmed from a missed US$4 payment in the month the deceased passed away, leading to a denied claim.
The family, who had relied on Ecosure’s insurance plan for financial support during the funeral, found themselves unable to cover the costs due to this lapse in payment.
In protest, they left the coffin at Ecosure’s branch, hoping to draw attention to what they described as a lack of compassion and understanding from the company.
Ecosure, a service provider underwritten by Econet Life, which is part of the Econet Zimbabwe Group, has faced criticism on social media and in the community following the incident.

Many are questioning the company’s strict policy enforcement, particularly for families facing financial hardship.
Ecosure has yet to comment on the specific case but has stated that policies require up-to-date payments for claims to be honored.
However, the incident has raised public debate over the need for flexibility and customer support in times of grief, with some suggesting that Ecosure review its policies to better support grieving families.
As the family seeks alternative ways to settle the funeral costs, the incident has brought renewed attention to the challenges some families face when relying on insurance during difficult times.
