Police Hunt for Suspect After Fatal Shootout in Eastern Cape

Authorities are searching for a suspect who escaped following a shootout with police in Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape, on the night of Friday, October 11. The incident left one suspect dead and has prompted a crackdown on criminal activities in the area.

According to Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, Public Order Policing (POP) officers responded to reports of two suspects involved in robbery and extortion in the Canzibe district of Ngqeleni.

“The suspects were tracked down outside a local tavern. Upon spotting the officers, the suspects opened fire, and police retaliated,” said Nkohli.

During the exchange, one of the suspects, a 35-year-old man, was fatally shot, while the second suspect managed to escape.

A 9mm Norinco pistol and ammunition were recovered at the scene. No officers or bystanders were harmed in the incident. Police have opened inquest and attempted murder dockets as part of their investigation.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, issued a strong warning to criminals involved in extortion schemes targeting businesses.

“Criminals targeting hard-working businesses will not be tolerated. We will take decisive action to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” said Mene.

Mene also urged the public to assist in combating extortion by reporting incidents through the dedicated hotline: 082 387 1561.

“Our goal is to rid the province of these criminal elements and ensure the safety of businesses and residents alike,” she added.
