JOHANNESBURG – In a shocking turn of events, a Zimbabwean national, Jabulani Moyo, has escaped from police custody after a brazen attack that left two South African detectives dead in Roodepoort. The incident has sent shockwaves through law enforcement circles and sparked a massive manhunt for the fugitive.
Moyo, who was facing charges for a business robbery from February 2023, was being transported back to prison after a court appearance on Friday, August 8. According to police reports, the two officers from the Trio Task Team were ambushed while driving an unmarked police vehicle along Albertina Sisulu Road. The officers were disarmed and shot, with one sergeant dying at the scene and a warrant officer succumbing to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.
Witnesses saw Moyo flee the scene in the police vehicle, which was later found abandoned a few kilometers away. The officers’ firearms were missing, and police have now launched a double murder investigation. Authorities have issued a public appeal for information on Moyo’s whereabouts, urging anyone with tips to contact the Crime Stop hotline or use the MySAPS App. The incident has raised serious questions about the security protocols for transporting high-risk prisoners and whether Moyo had accomplices assisting his escape.
Deadly Clash in Oudtshoorn Prison After Contraband Search
WESTERN CAPE – A tense standoff at the Oudtshoorn Medium-A Correctional Centre turned deadly, resulting in one inmate’s death and injuries to several officials. The violence erupted on Thursday morning during a routine unlock procedure, a day after officials had conducted a raid to confiscate contraband.
The search operation, which took place on Wednesday, uncovered cellphones and narcotics after officials had to use force to access a section of the prison where inmates resisted. The following morning, during what authorities describe as a “planned retaliation,” a group of inmates attacked correctional officials, injuring four with stab wounds to the face, head, and back. One inmate involved in the altercation was fatally wounded.
In response, the facility has suspended all inmate activities and visits. Inmates believed to be responsible for the stabbings have been isolated, and another search of the unit turned up more concealed weapons. A full departmental investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident and ensure the safety of both staff and inmates.
Four Suspected CIT Robbers Killed in Randfontein Shootout
RANDFONTEIN – A high-stakes police operation in Randfontein culminated in a fatal shootout, leaving four suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers dead. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning, August 5, came after a tip-off about a planned robbery.
Acting on intelligence from the Eastern Cape, a joint team from the Gauteng Tactical Response Team and other units intercepted a white Toyota Starlet carrying the suspects. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of bullets. All four suspects were killed, while no law enforcement or security personnel were harmed. Police recovered three firearms, including a rifle, and discovered the car was fitted with false registration plates.
Intriguingly, police also found traditional medicine, or “muti,” and a sticker with the phrase “Prayer is the key” inside the vehicle. The suspects are believed to be part of a criminal syndicate operating across provinces.
