Sport Minister Gayton McKenzie has criticized claims that he attended the Paris Olympics for a “joyride,” though he has not contested the reported cost of R800,000 to taxpayers.
Responding on X to a News24 article titled “Send me! McKenzie’s gravy train to Paris Olympics cost taxpayers R800,000,” McKenzie did not address the cost directly but emphasized his work during the trip.
Last week, he confirmed in Parliament that his attendance at the Paris Olympics amounted to R804,590.71. He stated, “Yes, I attended the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The total costs incurred by the department for my attendance at the Games amounted to R804,590.71.”
Additionally, McKenzie noted that eight officials from his department also made the trip. The largest expenses included R215,976 for flights, R113,271 for accommodation, and R454,005 for ground transportation.
Defending his visit, McKenzie insisted it was strictly for official duties. “I left the day the Olympics began for government meetings with other countries’ ministers. I didn’t attend the Olympics extensively, only the opening ceremony, and returned to work. I could have stayed longer but wanted to familiarize myself with my new responsibilities.”
He detailed his activities in Paris, including six pre-Olympics meetings, greeting South African athletes at the athletic villa, attending the opening ceremony, and watching various events on television.
In a follow-up post, McKenzie shared photos from his trip and reiterated, “What joyride?” He clarified his itinerary, emphasizing his official commitments and engagements.
On a separate note, McKenzie mentioned that the South African government is ready to assist the South African Football Association (SAFA) in securing funding for Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the Betway Premiership, estimating costs at around R80 million plus R70,000 per game.
