The Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported that 14 people have died from snake bites since the beginning of the year.
According to their disease surveillance report for the week ending September 15, there have been a total of 2,917 snake bite cases recorded in 2024, with 14 fatalities. In the most recent week, 31 snake bite cases were reported, but thankfully, no deaths occurred.
Additionally, the Ministry recorded 489 malaria cases and two fatalities during the same week. The deaths were reported in Marondera District (1) in Mashonaland East and at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital (1) in Harare.

Cumulatively, there have been 35,055 malaria cases and 78 deaths this year. Among the 489 malaria cases reported, 59 were in children under five, with the highest incidence seen in Mashonaland Central (244 cases) and Manicaland (85 cases). 14 Deaths from Snake Bites
In the same reporting period, nine deaths were linked to 8,482 cases of common diarrhoea. These fatalities occurred at Mpilo Central Hospital (1) in Bulawayo, Mwenezi District (1) in Masvingo, and Nyanga District (2) in Manicaland. Of the reported diarrhoea cases, 4,235 involved children under five years old.
The provinces with the highest numbers of diarrhoea cases were Mashonaland West (1,230 cases) and Manicaland (1,172 cases). Overall, there have been 257,601 cases of common diarrhoea and 136 deaths reported this year. 14 Deaths from Snake Bites
