A man from Harare has sought a protection order against his wife, claiming emotional and physical abuse over the past nine years.
Joseph Katumba told the court that his wife, Stella Kangara, had consistently denied him intimacy, citing his unemployment as the reason for her actions. He described how his attempts to connect with her had been met with aggression, including her yelling and physically pushing him away.
“Whenever I try to touch her, she screams, bites, and scratches me. She often accuses me of trying to harm her,” Joseph said, adding that he had been forced to sleep on the floor while his wife occupied their bed.
Joseph further alleged that his wife’s behavior had caused significant emotional and psychological distress, prompting him to seek a protection order to safeguard his well-being.

Stella, however, explained that her husband’s lack of financial support and failure to secure a job had drained her emotional connection. She stated that the lack of security in their marriage had led her to feel unloved, which had diminished any desire for intimacy.
“I need emotional and financial stability to feel appreciated,” she said. “His failure to contribute financially has made it hard for me to feel any closeness.”
Magistrate Meenal Naratom addressed the matter with concern, acknowledging that while financial challenges can contribute to stress, they should not justify any form of abuse. She granted Joseph a protection order, instructing Stella to cease any further emotional or physical mistreatment.
The court also encouraged the couple to consider marriage counseling to address their issues.
