An investigation has been launched following the circulation of a viral video showing a police officer assaulting a civilian.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered an immediate inquiry into the incident and has called for appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against the officer involved.
Provincial police spokesperson Col. Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the video, filmed in the Point area of Durban, shows the officer attacking a civilian who appeared to pose no threat. The footage also shows another officer trying to intervene and calm the situation.
Lt. Gen. Mkhwanazi emphasized that police officers are not above the law, stating that wearing a uniform does not grant permission to disregard legal principles. “If the individual in the video had committed a crime, the proper procedure would have been to detain or arrest him, not to assault him,” Mkhwanazi said.
He further stated that assaulting a person is a criminal offense, and the officer involved in the incident will face the necessary legal consequences. “We cannot allow such behavior to undermine the public’s trust in the police,” Mkhwanazi added. “We must address unprofessional conduct within our ranks, and the officer’s actions, which tarnish the reputation of the police, will be dealt with severely according to our Code of Conduct, Regulations, and the Constitution.”
Mkhwanazi reminded officers that they are meant to serve and protect the public, urging them to treat community members with dignity and respect. He also encouraged the public to report any instances of police abuse to ensure accountability and prevent future misconduct.
