Iran launched nearly 200 missiles towards Israel earlier this evening in a move that had been anticipated as retaliation for Israel’s campaign against the Hezbollah group in Lebanon.

Around 5:30pm UK time Israelis had been told to seek safety in bomb shelters and warning sirens sounded in Jerusalem.

A briefing by White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed that navy ships intercepted the missiles as they had headed to Israel.

An Israeli security official says most of these missiles were intercepted by the Israeli Air Force in cooperation with the US Air Forces Central Command.

Several hits were identified and the damage from those hits is currently being assessed, they say.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has vowed “there will be repercussions” following the “extensive” attack.

Meanwhile the Palestinian group Hamas has praised Iran’s “heroic” missile attack on Israel.

In a statement, the group, which is fighting Israel in Gaza, says “we congratulate” the rocket launches carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran “against wide areas of our occupied lands”.
