A 21-year-old man was apprehended in Matlapa village, Limpopo, for possession of illegal drugs. The suspect was arrested on Thursday by the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Provincial Organized Crime Investigation Unit, who found him with cocaine and heroin.
According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the man had several sachets of heroin and a clear plastic bag containing crystal meth, with an estimated total value exceeding R6,000.
“The suspect is set to appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October,” Ledwaba added.
In a separate incident in August, police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested two men accused of being illegal immigrants and caught with drugs worth R2 million. Colonel Robert Netshiunda reported that authorities found 900 heroin capsules in a vehicle belonging to a 34-year-old man.
Subsequent investigations led police to the suspect’s home on Sphiwe Zuma Avenue in Umbilo, where more heroin capsules and powder were discovered. The total value of the drugs recovered was estimated at R2 million.
In another drug-related case, a South African woman arriving at OR Tambo Airport was detained for swallowing small bags of drugs. The 21-year-old had returned from Brazil and was apprehended during a collaborative operation involving police and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Unit. SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that the woman, who had traveled from São Paulo, was sent to a local hospital for an X-ray, which revealed foreign objects in her stomach. She eventually expelled more than 110 bullets.
