Businessmen Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu have faced another setback as regional magistrate Stanford Mambanje denied their bail application in connection with the street lights tender fraud case.

Magistrate Mambanje stated that there is no dispute about their financial standing; they did not challenge the state’s assertion that they earn around US$250,000 from their business activities and could comfortably maintain a lifestyle outside the jurisdiction.

He further expressed his belief that there is a case against the two that warrants a full trial and that their continued detention is in the interests of justice.

Although Chimombe made a strong attempt to distance himself from the company, the magistrate noted a significant link between him and the firm.

“The appellants are the alter egos of the company; they are the company, and the company is them. They have not provided any reasonable defense against criminal liability,” Mambanje said.

The pair was remanded in custody until September 14.
