Makhadzi is facing backlash after being criticized for her portrayal of sign language in a recent music video. The award-winning artist has been accused of disrespecting the deaf community in the video for her song “Jealous Down,” where she uses hand gestures that some felt mocked sign language.
The South African Sign Language (SASL) platform shared a clip from the video, expressing disappointment and urging Makhadzi to promote inclusivity. “Using sign language to mock deaf people is UNACCEPTABLE, @makhadzisa,” the post stated, calling for a public apology.
Sign language mentor Dieumercy Asan condemned Makhadzi’s actions, saying the gestures not only disrespected deaf culture but also misled her audience. Asan highlighted that during Deaf Awareness Month, Makhadzi missed an opportunity to educate her fans about the struggles of the deaf community.
“If she intended to include sign language, hiring a professional interpreter would have demonstrated true respect and inclusion,” Asan said.
Patrick Mahlakwana, DPSA national chair, and other disability advocacy groups joined the criticism, emphasizing that Makhadzi should have used her influence to spread a message of unity.
According to “TimesLive,” Makhadzi has expressed regret and acknowledged the impact of her actions. She plans to issue a formal apology and request the removal of the controversial video clip from TikTok, admitting, “I didn’t realize how this would affect others. I take full responsibility and will release a public apology next week.”
