The Neema Foundation for the Deaf, which advocates for the rights and dignity of the deaf community, has invited award-winning musician Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, known as Makhadzi, and her team to participate in a complimentary master class on deaf sensitization and South African Sign Language (SASL).
This invitation comes in response to controversy surrounding a clip from Makhadzi’s music video for her song “Jealous Down.” In the video, Makhadzi was seen using sign language in a way that was criticized as inaccurate and not adhering to proper sign language grammar.
The South African sign language digital learning platform called for an apology, stating that the gestures were disrespectful to the deaf community.

Following the backlash, Makhadzi issued an apology for offending the deaf community. Itumeleng Motaung, chairperson of the Neema Foundation, noted that the timing of the incident was particularly unfortunate as it coincided with #DeafAwarenessMonth. Motaung pointed out that Makhadzi’s actions seemed to undermine an essential aspect of deaf identity.
Motaung emphasized that the incident could serve as a valuable learning opportunity. The Neema Foundation is offering Makhadzi a free SASL masterclass to help her gain a deeper understanding of the language and culture of the deaf community.
Motaung expressed hope that Makhadzi would view this offer as a chance to foster inclusivity and use her platform to celebrate diversity, thereby setting a positive example for others and promoting greater respect and understanding for the deaf community.
