A HARARE man stunned the courtroom yesterday when he offered US$2.50 per month for the upkeep of each of his four children.
One of the children has started Form One.
He claimed that he could only afford US$10 in maintenance.
Mufaro Chiwana, Jabulani Mututsa’s ex-wife, dragged him to the Maintenance Court, claiming US$280.
“I want him to help me care for the children.
“He has been ignoring the needs of his children, which is why I am here. “Our child, who is in Form One, only recently began attending school after I received my salary,” Mufaro explained.
In response, Jabulani told the court that he couldn’t afford the amount his ex-wife was claiming. “My contract will be terminated at the end of this month and it will be difficult for me to pay that amount.
“I will give her US$10 because I also need to pay instalments for a stand I bought.
“I have health problems and need medication. She ran away from me when I was admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital,” he said.
But, Mufaro said she left him because of his abusive conduct.
“He even tried to strike me with an axe. The money for the stand he is talking about was paid, so he is just lying.”
Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered Jabulani to pay US$50 plus 50 percent of the children’s school fees.
She also advised Jabulani to find ways of taking care of his children.
