Manhize USD$1.5 Billion Steel Plant Expected by June

The recently completed USD$1.5 billion steel plant in Manhize, near Mvuma, is set to commence operations by June this year, marking a significant milestone for Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco), a subsidiary of Tsingshan Holdings Group Limited. The plant, Africa’s largest integrated steel facility, is expected to bolster Zimbabwe’s engineering, iron, and steel sector upon activation.

With over 50,000 tonnes of coking coal stockpiles already on-site, the plant aims to mitigate the cost of raw materials in crucial sectors like construction, reducing the country’s reliance on steel imports, which currently amount to approximately US$1 billion annually.

Expected to employ over 2,500 people directly during initial production stages and ultimately up to 10,000, the project signifies a significant step towards Zimbabwe’s economic growth objectives.

By satisfying local demand first, Disco plans to expand its reach to neighboring countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, potentially becoming a major steel supplier for Africa.

The plant’s completion reflects the government’s efforts to create an enabling investment environment, positioning Zimbabwe as a key player in steel manufacturing. The project, utilizing locally mined raw materials, signifies a strategic shift towards self-sufficiency and job creation in the heavy industry sector.

Significant progress has been made, with key infrastructure components such as the main workshop, sintering plant, and blast furnace nearing completion. Additionally, the construction of a transmission power line from Kwekwe to Manhize is at an advanced stage, expected to facilitate the plant’s commissioning by May to June.
