Matthew Musengezi Arrested a Day After His Release

Prominent auto dealer and socialite Matthew Musengezi was arrested yesterday, the day after he was found not guilty on charges of culpable homicide. It seems that for him, it never rains but pours.

Prior to his judgement day on Monday, Musengezi had spent almost three weeks in remand prison. If found guilty in this case, he might have to go to jail.

Musengezi was found guilty of a lesser charge of failing to stop after an accident but was cleared of the accusation of culpable homicide.

The businessman received a $150 US fine and a 30-day driving prohibition.

His relief was short-lived, nevertheless, as Musengezi was apprehended in Harare yesterday by agents of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

The businessman was arrested last night because H-Metro was unable to determine the details of the corruption case.

“Yes, ZACC officers have arrested him, which should tell you that there is a case connected to corruption, though I’m not sure what kind of corruption it is,” the insider stated.

He and his family are going through a really trying moment, and just when they were beginning to rejoice that he had escaped going to jail for his previous case, he ended up in hot water once more.

Remember that he spent a significant amount of time in remand prison during his case for culpable homicide? The magistrate denied his request for bail, stating that he was unfit to be released on bond due to allegations made by the prosecution that he had been evading justice.

And now that these things have happened, he is in a complete mess.

Because Musengezi is involved in the purchasing and selling of luxury cars, it was not possible to determine yesterday night if the case involves his car sales.

“He is scheduled to appear in court today, tomorrow,” stated an additional insider.

The businessman has faced five counts since his initial court appearance last month, including culpable homicide, failing to stop, failing to report an accident within 24 hours, failing to provide help, and failing to guard a corpse after the accident. It has been a difficult three weeks for him.

On the other hand, magistrate Ntombizodwa Sibanda declared that the driver was intoxicated and so caused the accident, finding him not guilty of the charge of culpable murder.

Charlotte Chikoore, the state prosecutor, had claimed that Musengezi was a party to an accident on August 9, 2021, on Samora Machel Avenue in Harare that resulted in a man’s death. Musengezi, in defence, told the court that the other automobile cautiously moved into his lane, perhaps as a last-ditch effort to avoid colliding with debris lying on the road, and unintentionally touched the back right corner of his car.

According to Musengezi, he was not the cause of the collision that resulted in Zamba’s death because he did not modify his lane or the position of his car.

The magistrate accepted his account of events and speculated that the other driver may have been intoxicated due to the excessively inconsistent nature of his evidence.
