Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume’s official home is a property he bought last year for $270,000. However, drama unfolded yesterday when a commission investigating Harare’s affairs exposed him for providing false information about his residence.
During a public inquiry led by Justice Maphios Cheda, Mayor Mafume claimed that his home was located at 1110 Coronation Road in Greendale. But when the commission visited the address, they found it was actually a vehicle auction site, not a residential property.
When questioned about the mistake, Mayor Mafume said his real home was two blocks away from the location he had given. However, the commission did not accept his explanation and proceeded with the onsite inspection.
The embarrassing moment played out in front of journalists, commission members, and the public, forcing the Mayor to remain silent as the truth came to light. After the inspection, the convoy returned to the Disaster Management Centre, where public hearings are taking place.
This incident has raised concerns about the credibility of Mayor Mafume’s statements and could have serious consequences for him.
