A deadly collision between a Mercedes C-Class sedan and a truck in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, early on Sunday morning has sparked a debate over who was truly at fault.
The crash, captured on CCTV footage and shared widely on social media, shows the truck making a turn at an intersection on the R40. As the truck nears the turn, a black Mercedes attempts to stop by slamming on the brakes but crashes into the rear of the trailer.
Tragically, a female passenger in the car died at the scene, while the driver passed away later in the hospital.
Though it’s difficult to determine fault, it seems the Mercedes may have had the right of way. However, authorities suspect the driver of the Mercedes was speeding, as suggested by the video, especially considering the quiet roads at that time of day. This situation highlights the critical importance of driving cautiously and maintaining safe speeds when approaching intersections.
“The crash serves as a reminder of the importance of defensive driving,” stated Blue Chevron Driving Academy. “Excessive speed can reduce reaction time and increase stopping distance.”
While opinions on who is to blame are divided, many believe that the car’s speed played a key role in the crash. Some speculated that the truck driver might not have seen the car due to a blind corner.
Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, urged drivers to be mindful of fatigue and the risks of speeding, particularly during the busy festive season. “Take breaks and avoid rushing to your destination,” he advised.
