Mining companies, brick-making firms, and other heavy vehicle users responsible for damaging roads will now be required to repair them and could face steep fines for damaging newly rehabilitated roads, according to a government official.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona stated that companies causing road damage should contribute to repair efforts, rather than leaving the responsibility solely to the government.
Speaking at the inauguration of a newly rehabilitated 5km stretch of Solomon Mujuru Drive in Harare’s Dzivaresekwa Extension, Mhona emphasized the need for accountability from road users, particularly industries that heavily rely on the roads.
“We need to send a clear message,” Mhona said, “companies using our roads must also take part in maintaining them. This is not a form of punishment, but rather a way for all stakeholders to take responsibility for the upkeep of our infrastructure.”
Mhona also mentioned plans to collaborate with other government ministries, including Industry and Commerce, and Mines and Mining Development, to ensure these sectors play an active role in road maintenance. He stressed the importance of safeguarding infrastructure from vandalism, such as road signs.
