President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver the eulogy at the Special Official Funeral for the late Tito Mboweni, former Minister of Finance.
Earlier this week, Ramaphosa announced that the national flag would be flown at half-mast at all flag stations across the country from Wednesday to Saturday in honor of Mboweni.
The funeral for the first black governor of the South African Reserve Bank will take place on Saturday at Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen, Limpopo. Mboweni passed away last Saturday at the age of 65 after a brief illness, as confirmed by his family.
Mboweni was South Africa’s inaugural Minister of Labour from 1994 to 1999 under former President Nelson Mandela. He later served as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank for a decade and as Minister of Finance from 2018 to 2021 in Ramaphosa’s administration.
Regarded as a significant figure in South African politics, Mboweni’s contributions were recognized by colleagues and friends alike.
With temperatures expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius between noon and 3 PM, attendees, including dignitaries, will gather to pay their respects to the “Duke of Magoebaskloof.”
His body arrived at his family home in Sasekane village in Tzaneen on Friday, where a public viewing was held in the afternoon. After the service, the procession will move to Bordeaux (eBodweni) Cemetery for burial.
Additionally, the ANC in Limpopo hosted a memorial service to honor Mboweni’s legacy.
