President Emmerson Mnangagwa has officially declared a State of Disaster in response to the significant fire that devastated Mbare Traders Market on October 8, 2024.
The fire, which took several hours to control and whose cause has yet to be determined, has had a catastrophic impact on more than 4,000 traders by destroying the entire retail section and damaging parts of the wholesale market.
In a statement released on October 14, 2024, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works announced that this disaster declaration will facilitate the mobilization of resources needed for the market’s reconstruction and to support those affected. The statement highlighted:

“His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, has declared a State of Disaster under Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act [Chapter 10:06] following the destructive fire at Mbare Traders Market on October 8, 2024.”
The statement emphasized that the fire has significantly impacted the livelihoods of over 4,000 traders.
The declaration aims to mobilize essential resources, both financial and material, to aid in the market’s rebuilding and to help affected entrepreneurs revive their businesses.
