President Emmerson Mnangagwa made a significant announcement on Monday, appointing Monica Mavhunga, a senator from Mashonaland Central, as the new Minister for Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs. This appointment comes in the wake of the dismissal of Christopher Mutsvangwa from the same position last month.
Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Cabinet Secretary, confirmed that Mavhunga’s appointment would take effect immediately.
At 63 years old, Monica Mavhunga brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously served as the deputy to Mutsvangwa before his dismissal. Mutsvangwa’s departure stemmed from a disagreement with President Mnangagwa, who issued a directive for Mutsvangwa to choose between his ministerial position and his role as chairman of the war veterans association. Mutsvangwa sought to retain both positions, leading to his dismissal.

Mavhunga’s background adds depth to her new role; she is a former guerrilla fighter who actively participated in Zimbabwe’s war of independence during the 1970s. Additionally, she has previously served as the Minister of State for Mashonaland Central, demonstrating her commitment to public service and governance.
This appointment underscores Mnangagwa’s ongoing efforts to ensure effective leadership within his administration, particularly in key ministerial positions such as Veterans Affairs. Mavhunga’s track record and experience in both military and governmental spheres position her well to address the needs and concerns of Zimbabwe’s veterans community.
