The trial of business associates Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe is set to resume this Monday at the High Court, where they face allegations of defrauding the government of US$7 million in a failed Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme.
The program, which was designed to empower youths through livestock distribution, never materialized, leading to the duo’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Initially scheduled to begin in October last year, the trial has encountered multiple setbacks, as the accused pursued various legal applications, including an attempt to have their case referred to the Constitutional Court. However, this application was dismissed due to lack of merit, paving the way for the trial to proceed.
The State has lined up more than seven witnesses to testify against Mpofu and Chimombe, with prosecutors aiming to prove that the pair misappropriated government funds meant for the goat distribution initiative.
The case has drawn significant public interest, given its implications for corruption and accountability in government-led developmental programs. If convicted, the accused could face serious legal consequences, including possible jail time and financial penalties.
Proceedings will continue this week as the court hears evidence from the prosecution’s witnesses.
