The police the number of robberies occurring in pirate taxis, known as mushikashika, had spiked this month.
“The public is warned against boarding pirate taxis as they risk falling prey to criminals. Police in Harare are investigating four cases of armed robbery in which four people were robbed of their valuables worth US$2 809.00 in separate incidents which occurred between December 16 and 21,” Police tweeted.
The robberies occurred along Cork Road in Avondale, Clifford Avenue in Kamfinsa, Alpes Road near Groombridge shops and along Willowvale Road.
The victims were offered lifts by the suspects, who pretended to be genuine pirate taxi operators, before robbing them along the way.
“The vehicles used by the suspects include a Toyota IST vehicle registration number ADG 3163, a Toyota Wish registration number AFE 7248 and Toyota Mark X registration AFX 5286,”
Police said they are still investigating the cases.
Meanwhile, police have arrested Passion Precious, 28, Godknows Nhokwara, 39, and Taurai Togara, 37, for misappropriating command agricultural inputs and illegal possession of explosives.
The police stopped and searched the vehicle in which the suspects were travelling in and recovered 27 x 50 kilogrammes of compound L fertiliser and two boxes of Emex emulates explosives.
