Harare, Zimbabwe | On the eve of the ZIFA elective congress, where he is vying for the vice presidency, long-serving Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chief Executive Officer Kennedy Ndebele announced his resignation, effective January 24, 2025.
In a statement released Wednesday, the PSL expressed gratitude to Ndebele for his leadership, highlighting his role in the league’s growth and success.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Ndebele for his outstanding leadership and dedicated service to the PSL. His contributions were crucial in driving the league’s growth and achieving its success. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” read the statement signed by PSL Communications and Media Liaison Officer Kudzai Bare.
The PSL named Rodwell Thabe as Acting Chief Executive Officer, ensuring a smooth transition during the interim period.
Ndebele’s resignation coincides with the heated contest for leadership positions within Zimbabwean football’s governing body, ZIFA, where his experience and influence in the game could play a pivotal role in shaping its future direction.
Meanwhile, questions remain over whether outgoing PSL Chairman Farai Jere will uphold his decision not to seek re-election. Jere, disqualified from the ZIFA presidential race due to a discrepancy in his submitted O-Level certificate, had previously announced his intention to step down from the PSL to focus on the ZIFA election.
“This is going to be my last meeting in my capacity as the PSL chairman, but I may come back again because, as you know, I am the president of CAPS United,” Jere told reporters after the PSL EGM last month. “I am leaving this office by December 31, and my vice chairman Lifa Ncube will take over until the next PSL elections. Whoever will win the PSL chairmanship race will join us at ZIFA where I will be the president.”
However, with his ZIFA presidential bid derailed, Jere’s future role within the PSL remains uncertain.
