Tourism between Kenya and Uganda has nearly doubled in the past two years, driven by relaxed border restrictions and innovative joint marketing efforts.
According to the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC), over 600,000 tourists traveled between the two nations in 2023, compared to 320,000 in 2022.
Key initiatives include the use of ID cards for border crossings, infrastructure improvements, and joint beach-safari marketing campaigns, all of which have helped overcome market access barriers.

This has fostered increased tourism and collaboration between the two countries. Notably, the increased frequency of Uganda Airlines flights and an upgraded transportation network have further boosted visitor numbers.
Uganda’s Consul-General at the Kenyan Coast, Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, credited the surge in travel to successful Kenya-Uganda tourism conferences and growing synergies between the nations’ tourism sectors. He added that a planned trade and investment mission to Uganda in November is expected to further stimulate growth.
With stronger partnerships and enhanced awareness of each country’s tourist destinations, both Kenya and Uganda are capitalizing on a unified strategy to attract visitors to their diverse attractions.
