New University of Matopo Set to Boost Education in Matabeleland South

The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE), through its Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee (HEQAC), has granted approval for the Brethren in Christ Church (BICC) to establish the University of Matopo.

BICC, which already operates several schools including Matopo High, Mtshabezi High, and Wanezi High, is now expanding its educational offerings with the creation of the new university.

This development will increase the number of higher learning institutions in Matabeleland South Province, which will now have three universities, alongside Solusi University and Gwanda State University.

In an official letter addressed to Professor Henry Sibanda, chairperson of the University of Matopo Trust (UMT), ZIMCHE’s CEO Professor Kuzvinetsa Dzvimbo confirmed the approval for provisional registration. This provisional status will be valid from January 2025 to January 2026. Professor Dzvimbo stated:

“We are happy to inform you that the HEQAC has approved the application for the University of Matopo’s registration. The institution is granted provisional registration for a period of 12 months, from January 10, 2025, to January 11, 2026.”

The provisional registration permits the university to begin developing its physical infrastructure, gather academic resources, and submit its academic programs to ZIMCHE for approval. However, Professor Dzvimbo emphasized that the university can only begin enrolling students once it receives further specific approval from ZIMCHE.

Before the provisional registration expires, the University of Matopo must apply for full registration by submitting the required documents and paying the associated fees.
