The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has confirmed that nine Chinese nationals recently convicted of cocaine possession in Harare are awaiting deportation after paying fines of US$150 each.
The case has drawn widespread public criticism, with many questioning the leniency of the penalties handed down to the offenders — identified as Yu Hefeng, Dong Yunmei, Yang Wanwan, Wu Yuejun, Yang Qin, Fang Yue, Sun Jie, Yao Wenming, and Li Zhongju.
In a statement, the NPAZ acknowledged public concern and stressed that the authority remains committed to ensuring fair and diligent prosecution in all cases, regardless of nationality.
“We are fully aware of the public’s concerns regarding the sentencing of the nine individuals who admitted to cocaine use,” the authority said. “The NPAZ is committed to holding offenders accountable in accordance with the law of Zimbabwe. These nine are now awaiting deportation. Dangerous drugs are a threat to national well-being, and we will continue working tirelessly to fight this scourge.”
The prosecuting authority also announced new measures to ensure tougher handling of drug-related cases in the future. Public Prosecutors have now been instructed to apply the most appropriate charges and pursue harsher penalties to reflect the seriousness of drug offences.
According to the NPAZ, this shift signals Zimbabwe’s strengthened approach to tackling drug abuse, an issue of growing concern in communities nationwide.
“Going forward, drug offences will be prosecuted with the utmost efficiency, and sentences must reflect their gravity,” the statement read. “We welcome the vigilance of the public, which reinforces our shared commitment to eliminating drug abuse.”
The development comes as Zimbabwe grapples with a surge in drug-related crimes, sparking urgent calls for stronger deterrent measures within the justice system.
