The sudden and tragic death of Bikita’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Chibhi, has left many in shock and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his passing. According to sources close to the family, Chibhi took poison shortly after attending a Zanu PF kangaroo court meeting, where he was summoned to address certain inquiries.
During the meeting, Chibhi was reportedly questioned about various issues, including the sale of stands on Zanu PF-owned properties and the formation of a private company, Hanyani, allegedly established to conduct business with the council. The meeting, which included prominent Zanu PF figures and local officials, referenced a negative council audit report that sparked an investigation into senior council officials.

Following the meeting, Chibhi left in a distressed state and purchased a bottle of poison on his way home. He left the receipt on a table at home before consuming the poison at a nearby house he was building. The circumstances leading to Chibhi’s decision to take his own life are still under investigation.
The meeting, convened by Zanu PF district political commissar Kudakwashe Gopo, was attended by several party heavyweights and local officials. Despite confirmation of his involvement in summoning Chibhi to the meeting, Gopo declined to comment further on the matter.
Among those present at the meeting were former Army general Englebert Rugeje, Bikita East MP Court Zevezanai, former Education Minister Gabriel Machinga, Senator Anna Rungani, and other notable figures. However, it remains unclear what authority Zanu PF had to summon and question a CEO of a local authority.
