A cash-in-transit team lost $20,000 after picking up two hitchhikers while traveling from Beitbridge to Mutare.
The incident, reported by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, occurred on October 16, 2024. The team had picked up the passengers at Lutumba Service Centre and Machiloni in Beitbridge. It wasn’t until they dropped the hitchhikers off at Rutenga and Ngundu that they realized a locked cash box containing the money was missing.
Commissioner Nyathi noted that the police are investigating two theft and robbery cases from October 15 and 16, 2024, in Bulawayo and Masvingo, respectively.
In the Masvingo incident, the cash-in-transit crew offered a ride to two unknown individuals, only to discover the cash box missing upon reaching Ngundu.
Additionally, on October 15, a separate armed robbery took place at a steel company in Belmont, Bulawayo. Seven armed suspects overpowered security guards and made off with over $32,000. They restrained two guards and twelve workers, with one worker sustaining injuries during the assault.
The ZRP is seeking information to aid in their investigations. Those with leads are encouraged to contact the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 70 3631, WhatsApp 0712 800 197, or report to the nearest police station.
