Police in Cape Town arrested a 35-year-old suspect over the weekend for being in possession of drugs valued at R5 million.
The arrest occurred during Operation Lockdown III in Ruyterwacht on Saturday, September 28.
Provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, reported that officers were conducting routine crime prevention patrols on Zoetenal Street when they noticed a man standing next to a white Chevrolet Optra.
The man became visibly nervous upon seeing the police vehicles, prompting officers to search him.
Upon searching, drugs were found on the suspect, leading the officers to search the nearby house where he was standing. Inside, they discovered additional drugs, including 87,058 mandrax tablets, a large bag of unidentified white tablets, two large pieces of rock cocaine, and five large sachets of crystal meth.
The drugs have an estimated street value of R5 million.
The suspect is set to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court after being charged with drug dealing.
In a separate incident, a 37-year-old man was arrested by the Maitland Flying Squad in the early hours of Saturday morning. Officers searched an informal dwelling in Athlone, where they found and confiscated a .38 Special revolver.
The man will face charges for illegal possession of a firearm and will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
On Friday, September 27, a 38-year-old suspect in Lower Cross Roads, Philippi East, was arrested during crime prevention operations. He was found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
