Potraz Welcomes Starlink’s Intent to Operate in Zimbabwe
The Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has announced its willingness to allow Starlink to operate within the country, stating that it has received the necessary information for the application of a license from the company.
Potraz Director General Dr. Gift Machengete emphasized that under the Second Republic, Zimbabwe is dedicated to ensuring universal and affordable connectivity for all citizens, irrespective of the technology involved.
In a statement, Dr. Machengete clarified that Potraz has no plans to obstruct Starlink’s operations in any manner, even though the company is currently unlicensed to provide services in Zimbabwe. This indicates a positive stance from the regulatory authority towards Starlink’s potential entry into the Zimbabwean telecommunications market.
“They have expressed interest to offer services in Zimbabwe and have been provided with all the relevant information for them to apply. They have not yet done so.
“This means that their service offering in Zimbabwe is illegal because for as long as they remain without a licence,” he said.
