President Mnangagwa Heads to Ghana for State Visit to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to arrive in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday for a three-day State visit aimed at deepening long-standing diplomatic relations and advancing strategic economic cooperation between Zimbabwe and Ghana.

The visit is expected to open new avenues for political and economic collaboration, reinforcing ties rooted in the two nations’ shared history during Africa’s liberation struggles.

In a message shared on social media, Ghanaian President John Mahama said the visit provides an important opportunity to reaffirm the historic relationship between the two countries.

He noted that Ghana and Zimbabwe share a common legacy shaped by liberation movements that defined modern Africa, adding that Ghana’s support for Zimbabwe’s independence remains a significant part of their enduring partnership. President Mahama welcomed President Mnangagwa to Accra and expressed optimism about strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, outlined the objectives of the visit, describing it as a milestone in bilateral relations.

Professor Murwira said the two Heads of State are expected to hold discussions aimed at expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including politics, trade, education, science and technology, tourism, mining and social development.

He highlighted that the visit will mark the establishment of a structured Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation between Zimbabwe and Ghana — the first of its kind since both countries attained independence. While cooperation has existed previously, he explained that engagements had not been guided by a formal institutional framework.

The minister also commended diplomats and officials from both countries for facilitating the visit, expressing confidence that the engagements would further consolidate relations and deliver mutually beneficial outcomes.

Ahead of the State visit, Zimbabwe’s national trade development and promotion agency, ZimTrade, has been engaging key buyers and distributors in Ghana to explore business opportunities for Zimbabwean companies and promote private-sector partnerships.

The visit follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Zimbabwe and Ghana covering collaboration in higher and tertiary education, teacher training and research institutions.

The agreement is expected to promote curriculum development and joint research initiatives in priority sectors such as agriculture, mining and medicine, areas viewed as critical to driving industrialisation and economic growth in both countries.
