Presidential Goat Scheme Halted After Distributing 6,000 Goats Due to Supplier Issues

Harare, Zimbabwe | Approximately 6,000 goats were distributed under the Presidential Goat Scheme before it was halted due to issues and delays caused by the failure of contracted suppliers to provide the animals, Senators were informed yesterday.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development Minister, Dr. Anxious Masuka, stated that the scheme aimed to benefit 35,000 villages, including traditional chiefs, headmen, and village heads, and potentially 1.8 million households.

In response to a query from Manicaland Senator Irene Zindi about the status of the Presidential Goat Scheme, Dr. Masuka explained that the program has been paused for a thorough review and to learn from past mistakes. The program will resume after necessary improvements are identified.

“When the programme was mooted, we wanted to give the goats to chiefs, headmen and village heads,” Dr. Masuka said.
