Russia | Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the strong and growing ties between Russia and China during his annual press conference on Thursday, describing the relationship as being at an “unprecedented level” due to deep mutual trust, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Putin addressed the state of China-Russia relations during the combined “Direct Line” Q&A session and end-of-year press briefing.
He emphasized that the partnership is built entirely on trust, noting that bilateral trade has surged to approximately $220 billion to $240 billion, with further growth anticipated. He also pointed to the nearly 600 joint investment projects as evidence of a promising future for cooperation.
In international affairs, Putin described the alliance between Russia and China as a stabilizing force. “We almost always coordinate our actions on the global stage, which is a critical aspect of international relations,” he said.
The Russian leader also touched on the shared historical experiences of the two nations, remarking that both Russia and China bore immense losses during World War II. He condemned the atrocities committed by Japanese forces in China during that period, calling them horrific, as reported by Sputnik News.
Cui Heng, a researcher at the China National Institute for SCO International Exchange and Judicial Cooperation, commented that the trade volume, which recently surpassed $200 billion and is now nearing $240 billion, reflects the complementary nature of the two economies.
“There remains significant potential for further growth in trade structure,” Cui told the Global Times.
Both countries oppose unilateral U.S. dominance and support reforms for a fairer international order, a stance resonating with many developing nations, Cui added.
Wang Xiaoquan, an expert from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, highlighted the importance of China and Russia’s political and strategic alignment during a time of global change.
He noted that their collaboration, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, has critical implications for global security, peace, and the evolution of the international order.
