Renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Solomon Guramatunhu reportedly incurred a loss of $108,924 to a cryptocurrency trader. Lloyd Chiyangwa, aged 31, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs. Marehwanazvo Gofa, who detained him pending a ruling on bail. Chiyangwa is also contesting his detention.
According to the prosecution led by Mr. Lancelot Mutsokoti, in 2020, Dr. Guramatunhu purchased cryptocurrency while in India from a UK-based company. Upon returning to Zimbabwe, he enlisted Chiyangwa’s services, who specializes in cryptocurrency trading. Chiyangwa’s responsibility was to create wallets and five different accounts—Trust, Exodus, Cosmostation, Wemix, and Metamask—and to establish passwords for these wallets.
Between January 7 and January 27, 2024, Chiyangwa allegedly transferred 122,467 Matic tokens valued at $108,924.24 from Guramatunhu’s Metamask wallet to the Waybit exchange. The court heard that Dr. Guramatunhu realized the tokens were missing on January 27, 2024, when he attempted to move them to another wallet. It’s suspected that Chiyangwa conducted the transaction using his cellphone.
Chiyangwa faces similar charges in other ongoing court cases.
