Bruce Mugaduwi, a 32-year-old teacher at Commercial College in Mutare, has found himself at the center of a scandal that has rocked the education community.
Mugaduwi was recently convicted on two counts of unlawfully writing Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) examinations on behalf of two students.
The incident, which unfolded on October 16 last year, involved two students, Shellington Brown and Mirriam Maposa, who had allegedly made arrangements with Mugaduwi to write their ZIMSEC Mathematics examination on their behalf.
According to evidence presented by the State, both candidates sat for the examination as planned. However, instead of submitting their own work, Mugaduwi smuggled in the papers he had written on behalf of the duo, blending them with the batch meant for marking.
This audacious move resulted in the destruction of the genuine papers submitted by the two students, effectively erasing any trace of their academic misconduct.
The repercussions of Mugaduwi’s actions came to light when ZIMSEC withheld the results of both Shellington and Mirriam in January of this year. Subsequent investigations led to Mugaduwi’s arrest last Friday, shedding light on the elaborate scheme orchestrated within the walls of Commercial College.
The motivation behind Mugaduwi’s misconduct appears to be financial gain, as he reportedly received US$380 from Shellington and US$300 from Mirriam in exchange for his services.

In a swift legal response, Mugaduwi was fined US$150 for his role in the scandal. However, the implications of his actions extend far beyond a monetary penalty. The integrity of the education system has been called into question, with concerns raised about the prevalence of such malpractices and the measures in place to prevent them.
As authorities grapple with the aftermath of this incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding academic integrity and the need for stringent measures to safeguard the sanctity of examinations.
The case of Bruce Mugaduwi serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the consequences of betraying the trust bestowed upon educators and the enduring impact of academic dishonesty.
