Harare, Zimbabwe | A member of the United Methodist Church has shared heartbreaking details of a tragic incident in which Evangelist Norest Nyakudanga collapsed and passed away while delivering a sermon in Highlands on Tuesday night.
The 65-year-old evangelist, from St. Peters Chitungwiza, was the guest speaker at the End of Year Revival gathering at Chisipite UMC assembly. Several church members witnessed the event, including those following the proceedings on Facebook.
One congregant, who was present during the sermon, recounted the events in a poignant WhatsApp message. She noted that Evangelist Nyakudanga appeared in good health and was in high spirits, even dancing before the Bible reading.

“He was as fit as usual,” she remarked, recalling how he interacted joyfully with others in attendance.
In his message, Nyakudanga expressed concern about the negative and divisive messages emerging from the church, emphasizing the need for powerful and uplifting teachings. However, moments later, it became apparent that something was wrong. The evangelist attempted to steady himself at the pulpit before collapsing. The witness believes he may have already passed away before hitting the floor.
First responders, including nurses in the congregation, rushed to assist him but sadly confirmed that he had lost his life.
Rangarirai Nyahodza, chairman of the Chitungwiza-Marondera MUMC, described Evangelist Nyakudanga as a dedicated and humble leader who remained steadfast in his faith.
“We have lost a true leader who embodied the gospel,” he stated. “His commitment to teaching others about Christ was unwavering, and his passing while preaching is a testament to his calling.”
Mourners have gathered at his home in Zengeza 5 Extension, and he is expected to be laid to rest tomorrow at Donzwe Village, Mutoko.
